Mercedes-Benz crossed 30000th car assembled in india

When you allot 100 acres of land for the production of your cars, it's quite clear you mean business. And that is exactly what Mercedes-Benz had in mind when it inaugurated its sprawling production facility at Chakan in March 2009. Nearly two years since the word go the German carmaker's Chakan plant in India has now achieved an epic production figure of 30,000 locally assembled cars

Among the fastest growing green-field projects in the country with a flexible manufacturing processes allowing other Mercedes-Benz products to produced on the same assembly line, the Chakan plant has pretty much spearheaded the assembly of Mercedes-Benz cars here in India.

Having sold close to 14,000 units in India since its introduction in 1996, it was the stylish E-Class which became 30,000th Mercedes-Benz car to be manufactured in India.

Riding on the its successful reign in India since early 2009, Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India (now retired) announced, "Within only two years since start of our new facility we have already exceeded first shift capacity. Due to high demand of our vehicles we are now moving into permanent two shift operation." This is great news for India, which has responded well to Mercedes-Benz cars since its Indian foray.

Taking into consideration its aggressive growth in India, the company has now decided to set-up its own technologically advanced paint shop capable of water based painting. The paint shop is targeted to be operational by the second half of 2012 with an annual capacity of 20,000 units (which can be extended up to 40,000 units annually). This paint shop will take Mercedes-Benz’s total investment in its Chakan production facility to more than Rs. 600 crore
